Maxine Hartswick | Teaching ArtistMaxine studied photography at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. She received a BFA from Tyler, followed by an MFA from Florida State University. Although she continued to study photography she also ventured into the more animated world of theater and was consequently inspired to design and build costumes and props for her photographs. After graduate school Maxine returned to Philadelphia and alternately worked as a seamstress for The Philadelphia Opera Company and designed numerous shows for The Wilma Theater, Interact Theater Company, Enchantment Theatre and the Bryn Mawr College theater department. She is now fortunate to be able to make art with the amazing kids at Doernbecher, whose brave, profound and always unedited views of their world are reminders that it really does take "courage to create". |
